Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park

A truly rugged place in the winter, the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park rests on the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan. Cold, with tons of snow, this park is a premier place to recreate during the winter, attracting skiers, snowshoers, and campers.

In January 2018, I camped with a few others for a long weekend in this “mountainous” terrain. While altitude wasn’t an issue, considering the tallest peak in the park is less than 2,000 feet, the cold sure was. Temperatures dipped below zero at night, while only hovering above zero during the day. The nights are long. The days often cloudy, with the sun struggling to poke through at times.

Nonetheless, this place offers an astounding experience for nature and winter-lovers who want to experience the season’s raw power and all the challenges that go with it.
