Sierra Club - North Star Chapter
The Sierra Club - North Star Chapter is a collective of 80,000 donors who work to protect the well-being of their communities through environmental protection. The North Star Chapter is a part of the Sierra Club, the oldest grassroots organization in the United States. The national branch is based in California.
What’s My Role?
I’m a volunteer on the communications team and for the program Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO), which aims to connect people to the outdoors through half-day and daylong trips. The program usually partners with other organizations in the area to expand the reach of the program and extend these opportunities to other communities.
On the communications team, I work as a copyeditor, writer, designer, and photographer. The main project I’ve been a part of so far has been working as a copyeditor and writer for the North Star Journal, a biannual print publication that goes out to 80,000 donors statewide. Beyond that, I’ve helped design graphics for social media, flyers, and to contribute photos of nature, events and more.
For ICO, I tag along on trips with organizations, with the main responsibility of helping facility connects between people and nature in any way that I can.
Some of My Work
Graphic Design
The Sierra Club hosts many events around the Twin Cities every year, including an annual leadership training event. In 2019, I created a flyer and social media graphics to help promote the training in the area. I also wrote the copy — or adapted it from other assets — on booth the social graphics and flyer.
Copywriting and Editing
I started working on the North Star Journal for the Fall/Winter 2019 edition. I had an article published and I helped copyedit the rest of the of the Journal, including the articles and the rest of the nearly 30-page publication.
This article was a leadership profile, featuring Liz Dengate who leads the Inspiring Connections Outdoors program. The article tells about her connection to the outdoors and what’s inspired her determination to help and inspire others to connect with and protect nature.
